Cold War | Chess | Iceland

A high-stake chess game

September 2020

Bobby Fisher (USA) versus Boris Spassky (RUS) play chess at the height of the Cold War.

Introduction

You may not realize it today, but the World Chess Championship 1972 was immensely popular; way more than the release Star Wars (came out in 1974). It was followed all across the world, as it symbolized the Cold War between USA and Russia.

I don't want ever to be champion again. ~ Boris Spassky

The game was rather striking because it personified 'The East' and 'The West' in a head-to-head battle - for millions to watch. It was a vivid, real way in which the Cold War manifested itself into something hot and real (like the Vietnam War, Sino-American diplomacy and the Star Wars program)

Hidden Gem

I could tell you much more about Bobby Fischer's life and relation to Iceland, but I rather keep it hidden to the general public: feel free to investigate yourself, and reap what you sow.

I don't believe in psychology. I believe in good moves. I like the moment when I break a man's ego. All that matters on the chessboard is good moves. ~ Bobby Fischer

The Game

The match-up between the grandmasters lasted 21 games of chess. Among those the 6th game has special importance and is generally most loved by fans. Here is my personal favorite chess channel replaying the game on Youtube.
